DesignMint vs IMG.LY: a print studio or an editor SDK?

IMG.LY’s CE.SDK is a general-purpose editor that runs almost anywhere. DesignMint is a print studio with the store and prepress attached. Where each one fits.

Shops that want customers designing their own products usually compare two kinds of tool: a general-purpose editor SDK that can be shaped into a print tool, and a studio that starts from print. IMG.LY’s Creative Editor SDK (CE.SDK) is the best-known example of the first. DesignMint is the second.

Both are serious products. The real question is how much of the print workflow you want to build yourself.

What each one is

CE.SDK is an editor engine with ready-made interfaces for web frameworks, iOS, Android, React Native, Flutter and desktop. Print is one of its use cases, next to photo, video and marketing templates. It offers templates with locked zones, variable data printing and print-ready PDF export — PDF/X, CMYK through ICC profiles, and named spot colours.

DesignMint starts from the garment. The Back Office draws print areas on the real product in millimetres, the Studio enforces those rules while the customer designs, and every order produces a proof and production files. Around the studio sit a hosted storefront (Commerce) and a production artwork API (Prepress).

Where DesignMint is the stronger fit

  • You sell decorated products and want each technique’s rules — print area, DPI, colour limits — enforced while the customer designs, not caught at prepress.
  • You want the studio, the store and the production files from one vendor, with prices you can read before a sales call.
  • Your artwork arrives as low-resolution uploads, and you want them fixed by the same system that takes the order.
  • You embroider: stitch previews and DST, EXP or PES files come with the studio.

Where IMG.LY is the stronger fit

  • You need native editing on iOS or Android, or inside Flutter or React Native apps — DesignMint’s studio is a set of React packages for the web.
  • Print is not your only product: photo, video or marketing templates sit alongside it.
  • You run variable data printing across large template runs.
  • You plan to build your own commerce, pricing and production flow around the editor.

The short answer

If the editor is the product, CE.SDK gives you the widest platform reach. If the printed product is the product, DesignMint gives you the editor and the print workflow around it, already joined up.
